Newspaper Story: How can a loving God allow suffering in Haiti, other disasters?

Once more we received a call from the News-Sentinel asking us to respond to a specific question. We only had 1/2 day to respond. Media specialist Adelle Barrette went into action and worked with President Cook to give them our reply. It was a good opportunity to share some church doctrine with the Lodi readers. The story was too large to scan, so here's a digital picture of it.
This was our response:
In the case of the terrible earthquake in Haiti, it was a natural happening. No one caused it to happen. Those who lost their lives will pass through the veil and return to their creator. Their bodies return to the earth, but their spirit lives on.
When we are born, we are subject to all the vagaries life presents. We believe that earth is a probationary time where we learn to live as Jesus Christ would have us live. We are guided through this life by the knowledge we gain from reading the scriptures, from Old and New Testament prophets and from modern-day prophets, and by living God's commandments.
A positive result of the earthquake is the way all nations and peoples have come together to help the Haitian people. The people of Haiti know that they are not alone.
